A new kind of movie hits theaters this month[3]. Sure[4] to please family audiences[5] with its blast of holiday cheer[6], The Polar Express also holds out some appeal to[7] cinemaphiles and technogeeks[8] who usually steer clear of seasonal sentiment[9]: This movie makes computer graphics history[10].

The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis (Cast Away, Forrest Gump), stars Tom Hanks in five digital roles, including the doe-eyed main character[11], a young boy who’s lost his faith in Santa[12] only to regain it after[13] a midnight ride to the North Pole aboard a magic train[14].

Far from[15] the familiar cartoon line drawings[16] and voice-overs of most animated features[17], this film used real actors in a process called performance capture[18], which lets any actor play any role[19], regardless of age or sex[20]. Hanks plays not just the boy but Santa Claus, a train conductor, and a ghostly hobo[21] too, each having a different voice and look tweaked to perfection during production[22]. The technique also releases filmmakers from the constraints of location shooting[23].

Motion capture[24], as the approach is more commonly called[25], is not new. It has been around since the 1980s[26] and is frequently used in the sciences and in medicine to study locomotion[27]. What is new is[28] using this method to make an entire movie[29], a completely computer-generated end product[30], but with an all-human cast[31].

Instead of donning fancy costumes[32], these actors slipped on wet suit-like outfits[33] equipped with hundreds of light-reflecting beads[34]. Dozens of infrared sensors[35] on propless stages[36] digitally recorded the movements of the actors as they performed their scenes. The data were converted by computer into three-dimensional representations of the characters[37], conveying every nuanced movement of the face and body[38]. A small army of 500 visual-effects specialists[39] from Sony Pictures Imageworks then virtually layered on flesh and fabric to the digital stars[40] and filled in the scenery[41] until they had their movie—a startlingly good visual match to Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved 1985 children’s book by the same name[42].

The Polar Express was released November 10[43] in both traditional movie houses and IMAX theaters across the country[44]. The IMAX version offers more than a screen as tall as seven stacked elephants[45]: It’s in 3-D. This means[46] snowflakes appear to fall directly on the audience[47], and at one point[48] the movie’s steam train stops just short of patrons’ noses. The all-digital shoot made conversion into 3-D easier[49], but the images still had to be transferred via laser printer onto real film for projection[50]. IMAX theaters actually play two reels simultaneously on one screen[51], their images separated only slightly in distance[52], and 3-D glasses mesh them into one[53].

Wherever you see it, the result of the $150-million-plus budget[54] and three-year production schedule is stunning[55]. The faces of the characters look breathtakingly lifelike[56], from freckles to hair follicles to facial twitches[57], and you may believe you are seeing real actors—for an instant. The movie perfectly recreates the icy blue-and-white tones of the original book’s oil and pastel drawings[58] as well as[59] its warm glows and dreamy sense of nighttime hyperrealism[60].

Unfortunately, after a few minutes of awe[61], the boundaries of performance capture begin to show[62]; the characters’ body movements appear jerky like puppets on strings[63], and their hands somehow don’t look right, often hanging motionless in space. Yet, for the novelty[64] of watching an entire movie about people but never really seeing one—it’s worth taking a ride on The Polar Express[65].
